INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING TRANSFORM.LGO 1. If you are reading this using Windows Notepad, make sure you have activated Word Wrap (from the Edit menu). 2. The file TRANSFORM.LGO contains a number of logo procedures for use with MSW LOGO. If you haven't got MSW LOGO then you are missing out on a very good package which is completely free. It can be downloaded at www.softronix.com 3. Start MSW LOGO. From the File menu select Load. Go to the location where you have saved TRANSFORM.LGO, select the file and click on Open. 4. The file contains a number of procedures which produce various right-angled triangles on the screen as follows: T1 - a green triangle T2 - a red triangle T3 - a blue triangle T4 - a pink triangle T5 - a yellow triangle Simply type the mane of the procedure to produce that particular triangle. 5. The main purpose of these procedures is to enable the teacher to use LOGO as a teaching resource i.e. they are designed to teach pupils about transformations, not to teach them about the LOGO language. Use the procedures to demonstrate transformations to the whole class (this is possible, even with only a 14 or 15 inch monitor, but a bigger monitor or projector is even better). 6. Here are a few examples of the sorts of things you could demonstrate and discuss with the whole class. Type in T1 and T4 to produce the green and pink triangles on the screen. Then say to the pupils "What sort of transformation is needed to get from the pink to the green triangle?" Type in T2 to produce the red triangle and then say "What transformation is needed to get from the green to the red triangle?" "What transformation is needed to get from the pink to the red triangle?" Type in T3 to produce the blue triangle and then say "What transformation is needed to get from the green to the blue triangle? "What transformation is needed to get from the red to the blue triangle? "What transformation is needed to get from the pink to the blue triangle? Type in T5 to produce the yellow triangle and then say "What transformation is needed to get from the green to the yellow triangle? "What transformation is needed to get from the yellow to the blue triangle? 7. After you have discussed the appropriate transformation with the class you can also demonstrate it to them using one of the other procedures that are included in the file. Here are the procedures that are available - simply type it in and watch what happens. There are reflections, rotations and translations. pinktogreen greentopink greentored redtogreen pinktored redtopink greeentoblue bluetogreen redtoblue bluetored pinktoblue bluetopink greentoyellow yellowtogreen bluetoyellow yellowtoblue You might need to clear the screen after each transformation (CS) and then get the appropriate triangles back on the screen (T1, T2, T3, T4, T5) before doing the next transformation. 8. You could also use these procedures in another way if you are able to take pupils along to a computer room and sit them, either individually or in pairs, at a computer. Produce a worksheet containing instructions and questions i.e. ask pupils to produce the triangles on the screen and then ask them to describe fully the transformation to get from one to the other. If they need a clue they could type in the transformation procedures listed above. I hope you find these procedures valuable in your maths teaching. Let me know how you get on.
