INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING NUMBERS.MYW 1. If you are reading this using Windows Notepad, make sure you have activated Word Wrap (from the Edit menu). 2. The file NUMBERS.MYW requires My World version 3. If you haven't got this then you are missing out on a excellent package which can be used right across the primary curriculum. You can find further details at www.dialsolutions.com 3. Download or copy the file to the location where you keep all of your My World screens and then load the screen in the same way that you load others that you use (there are several different ways of loading My World screens; see the My World Help facility for further details). 4. Like all My World screens, it can run full-screen or in a window (CTRL-F to toggle between these). When running in a window it is designed to run with a screen resolution of 800x600 or higher. If you are only using 640x480 then you will have to do a lot of scrolling left/right and up/down. 5. The screen is primarily for the teacher to use as a teaching aid when focusing on place value and on the patterns in the numbers system when we count on in 1s, 10s and 100s. You could start with some whole-class chanting, counting on in 10s or 100s. Next, point at a tens card and a units card and ask pupils what number is formed when they are combined. Demonstrate this by clicking on each card in turn and placing it in the lower part of the screen. Then combine the cards to form the number. Repeat this with other combinations of cards, perhaps involving hundreds, tens and units. You can also work in reverse to look at partitioning. i.e. combine cards to make various numbers on the screen in advance (save the screen under a new name) and then use these with the whole class. 6. If you have got access to an interactive whiteboard this My World screen provides a very effective way of demonstrating place value to the whole class because you can drag the cards around the board rather than having to sit at the computer. I hope you find this My World screen useful. Let me know how you get on. Richard English www.numeracysoftware.com feedback@numeracysoftware.com
