INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING COMPASS.LGO 1. If you are reading this using Windows Notepad, make sure you have activated Word Wrap (from the Edit menu). 2. The file COMPASS.LGO contains a number of logo procedures for use with MSW LOGO. If you haven't got MSW LOGO then you are missing out on a very good package which is completely free. It can be downloaded at www.softronix.com 3. Start MSW LOGO. From the File menu select Load. Go to the location where you have saved COMPASS.LGO, select the file and click on Open. 4. The file contains a number of procedures which draw the points of the compass, as follows: NORTH or N SOUTH or S EAST or E WEST or W NORTHEAST or NE SOUTHEAST (abbreviation SE doesn't work) SOUTHWEST or SW NORTHWEST or NW NORTHNORTHEAST or NNE EASTNORTHEAST or ENE EASTSOUTHEAST or ESE SOUTHSOUTHEAST or SSE SOUTHSOUTHWEST or SSW WESTSOUTHWEST or WSW WESTNORTHWEST or WNW NORTHNORTHWEST or NNW (Note that the abbreviation SE doesn't work because of a conflict with a command in the LOGO language) Simply type the mane of the procedure or its abbreviation to produce that particular point of the compass. There are three other procedures that you might like to use, as follows: COMPASS4 - draws the four main points of the compass COMPASS8 - draws the eight main points of the compass COMPASS16 - draws all 16 points of the compass listed above 5. The main purpose of these procedures is to enable the teacher to use LOGO as a teaching resource i.e. they are designed to demonstrate the points of the compass to pupils, not to teach them about the LOGO language. Use the procedures to demonstrate and discuss the points of the compass with the whole class (this is possible, even with only a 14 or 15 inch monitor, but a bigger monitor or projector is even better). I hope you find these procedures valuable in your maths teaching. Let me know how you get on. Richard English www.numeracysoftware.com feedback@numeracysoftware.com
