INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING RANMAZE2.LGP 1. If you are reading this using Windows Notepad, make sure you have activated Word Wrap (from the Edit menu). 2. The file RANMAZE2.LGP contains a number of logo procedures for use with SuperLogo. SuperLogo is an excellent commercial product aimed at pupils working at Key Stages 2 and 3 (7 to 13 year-olds). Further details of SuperLogo can be found at http://www.logo.com A demo version of SuperLogo can be downloaded from the website. 3. Start SuperLogo. From the 'File' menu select 'Open Project'. The 'Open Project' dialogue box should appear. Go to the location where you have saved RANMAZE2.LGP, select the file and click on OK. 4. Depending on the resolution of your screen you might have to change the size of the SuperLogo drawing area and turn on the scrollbars. To do this select 'Set Screens' from the 'Options' menu. Type in a new width and height for the screen and make sure the 'Has Scroll Bars' box is checked. Finally click on OK. 5. The file contains procedures which produce randomly generated mazes for pupils to find their way through. Three different levels of difficulty are available. To produce the mazes, type one of the following in the text window and press Enter. EASYMAZE MEDMAZE HARDMAZE When the maze has been produced the pupil must find a way through the maze without touching any of the black areas. 6. These sorts of activities are ideal early LOGO experiences for pupils, enabling them to practise simple LOGO skills (FORWARDS, BACKWARDS, RIGHT and LEFT turns). The mazes can be completed using only 90 degree turns so they can be used by young pupils who haven't necessarily encountered angles other than right angles. General mathematical skills such as estimation, trial and improvement and problem solving are also being developed. I hope you find these procedures valuable in your maths teaching. Let me know how you get on. www.numeracysoftware.com feedback@numeracysoftware.com
